Career Coach
He worked with the youth team of Angola, which in 2001 led to triumph at the junior championship of Africa.
In the summer of 2003, Gonçalves was offered to become the head coach of the Angola national team . The coach's historic achievement was the withdrawal of the Angola team for the final of the 2006 World Cup . During the qualification tournament, the Angolans lost only one game against the Zimbabwe national team and scored 21 points. The Nigeria team scored the same number of points, which Angola was ahead of in the final standings due to the victory in the full-time meeting, thus ensuring its first ever participation in a world football tournament.
In early 2006, the Gonçalves team took part in the African Nations Cup , where they failed to overcome the group stage. Having scored the same number of points with the Democratic Republic of the Congo , she took only third place in the group due to the worst difference between goals scored and goals conceded; to get ahead of the DR Congo, she only needed one goal scored. As part of the Angolans, striker Amadou Flaviu most successfully acted, who scored three goals.
Six months later, the Angolans made their historic debut at the World Cup. At the group stage of the mundial, the opponents of the Africans in the group were the teams of Portugal , Mexico and Iran . The disciplined game of the Angolans in defense, to which Gonçalves emphasized, allowed them to lose to the Portuguese minimally (0: 1) and defend a goalless draw against the Mexicans. Before the last round, the head coach’s team retained the chances of leaving the group that they didn’t realize, having obtained only a draw (1: 1) in the game against Iran, in which she scored her historic first goal in the final parts of the World Cup. Angola did not overcome the group stage, but gained two points and took third place, ahead of the Iranians by one mark.
In 2008, Gonçalves led the Angola national team at its second African Nations Cup . At this tournament, his team overcame the group stage, bypassing the teams of Senegal and South Africa in the standings and not having suffered a single defeat at this stage. However, already at the first stage of the playoffs, in the quarterfinal they were opposed by the Egyptian team , which, not without problems (with a score of 2: 1), overcame the Angolan barrier, and subsequently won this continental championship.
Soon after the completion of CAN-2008, Gonçalves left the coaching staff of the national team [1] [2] .
