Creation History
The Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine dates back to the late 1980s, when a series of miners' speeches in Ukraine and throughout the USSR marked the restoration of an independent trade union movement.
The creation of independent trade unions was and is a natural reaction of employees to the inability to obtain real protection of their labor and socio-economic rights and interests from the old, state-owned unions.
The first independent trade unions in Ukraine arose against the backdrop of acute labor conflicts, primarily in the mining and transport sectors, where the work of workers is the most dangerous and responsible. In these areas, local strikes began already in 1988 , and soon mass ones.
Independent trade unions began to operate as workers' associations of a higher organizational level compared to strike committees. This corresponded to the transition from spontaneous labor unrest to a constant, systematic and varied in form of struggle of employees for their rights and interests (strikes and other protests, collective bargaining and collective bargaining agreements, lawsuits, search for political partners, participation in election campaigns , appeal to international institutions, etc.).
Mutual solidarity support of independent trade unions of workers in various industries has become one of the effective forms of such a struggle. In the early years of Ukrainian independence, there was an intensive search for optimal ways to consolidate the independent trade union movement in Ukraine.
In June 1997, the Association of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine was established. An extraordinary congress was held on December 23, 1998, at which the Association of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine was reorganized into the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (KVPU).
