Length - 40-60 cm, 1-2 cm in diameter, the upper end has an oblique cut, near it there is a whistle hole. On the front side of the trunk there are 2-6 finger holes (in a traditional labial-slot instrument, 2-3 holes).
In the musical life of the Mari people, shiyaltysh with various scales were fixed. The timbre of the instrument is soft, transparent in low register, harsh, whistling in high. Shiyaltysh is mainly a solo instrument, shepherds loved to play it, shiyaltysh usually have lyrical, wide-breathing melodies, often with melismatic decorations.
