Start of a professional career

He made his debut in mixed martial arts at the professional level in October 2001 at the tournament of the newly established American organization World Extreme Cagefighting , forced his opponent to surrender in the first round with the help of the “ triangle ”. At the same time he performed in other small US promotions, such as Ultimate Athlete, Gladiator Challenge and International Fighting Championships.

With five wins in the record without a single defeat, in October 2002, he won the right to challenge the WEC title title in the semi-lightweight category. He defeated another challenger Philip Perez and thus became the first champion of the organization in this weight.

In October 2003, he successfully defended the championship belt, winning by technical knockout from Anthony Hamlett .

He lost his championship title only in March 2006, having suffered a technical knockout loss from Uray Feber .

Subsequently he went into a cage against such famous fighters as Jens Pulver and Antonio Banyelos , but lost to both of them.
