Iannis Latsis ( Greek: Γιάννης Λάτσης , September 14, 1910, Katakolon [2] - April 17, 2003, Athens ) - Greek shipowner and entrepreneur. In 2003, the fortune of the Lacis family amounted to 5.4 billion US dollars and Yannis Spyros was 101st in the list of richest people according to Forbes magazine [2] .

Biography
Yannis Latsis was born on September 14, 1910 in Katakolon [2] [3] in Elida in the family of the railwayman Spyros Latsis ( Σπύρος Λάτσης ) and Aphrodite Efthymiou ( Αφροδίτη Ευθυμίου ). He was the 7th child out of 21 [4] [5] .
He studied at a commercial gymnasium and a school of merchant marine captains in Pyrgos . He worked from early childhood, was a fisherman on local kaiks , a baggage operator in for Piraeus ferries, a decker [2] on a cargo ship transporting raisins to Italy . Reached the assistant captain. In 1938 he bought the first ship - a small passenger ferry in the Gulf of Saronikos . During the Second World War, engaged in ferry services between the islands [4] .
In 1940 he married Eriet Tsukalas ( Greek Eριέττα Tσουκαλά ). Later, the son of Spyros (born 1946) and the daughters Margarita ( Greek Μαργαρίτα ) and Maryana were born ( Μαριάννα , born 1953) [2] [5] [3] .
In 1955 he bought a small tanker and began to transport molasses from Egypt to Greece, became the European representative of the Egyptian company United Molasses Company of Egypt [4] . At the same time, on two ships began to carry Muslims making a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia [3] . He maintained good relations with Ahmed Yamani , the Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia in 1962-1986. In the 1960s, he became a major shipowner [2] . In 2003, the total displacement of the Latsis merchant fleet was 2 million gross tonnes [4] .
In 1967, the regime of "black colonels" came to power in Greece, in the June six-day war, Egypt was defeated by Israel, which changed the situation in the region. Latsis engaged in the supply of cheap oil from the Kingdom of Libya to Greece and the construction of oil refineries. In 1969 he founded the company Petrola Hellas SA [2] [6] . In 1971, he began to build the Elefsina refinery refinery in Elefsis with a capacity of 1 million tons per year [3] [4] . He founded the company Petrola International SA in Jeddah [7] . In 1979, Yannis bought the Banque de Dépôt bank in Geneva , owned by the Onassis family [11] . In 1988, he founded The Private Bank & Trust Company Limited (since 1997 - EFG Private Bank Limited) in London [2] [12] [9] . The large Greek bank Eurobank Ergasias was founded by Latsis as Euromerchant Bank SA in 1990 [9] [13] [14] . A member of the board of directors of the bank was Mariana Lacis [4] .
His son, Spyros Lacis, founded the EFG Bank European Financial Group in 1981 An SA in Geneva [15] engaged in banking. In 1989, Spyros became chairman of Luxembourg-based EFG Consolidated Holdings SA. EFG Consolidated Holdings SA in 2012 owned a 43.6% stake in Eurobank Ergasias [16] .
Yannis Latsis was engaged in aviation, road and rail transport [5] . In 1976, he founded the Swiss airline PrivatAir SA [17] [18] The Latsis family owned 50% of the company Swissport Hellas, the Greek division of the Swiss company Swissport operating ground services at 21 airports in Greece, including Athens International Airport [19] . Lamda Development, a family-owned development company founded in 1977, was a strategic partner of the German construction company Hochtief in Greece on European Union-funded projects. Hochtief built and operates the Athens International Airport [20] [21] .
Latsis owned houses in Athens, Geneva and London [2] . In 1981, Bridgewater House was bought for £ 19 million in St. James . On July 5, 1990, he hosted the guests of the NATO Summit in London at the Bridgewater House in London [5] . Among the friends of Yannis was Charles, Prince of Wales (born 1948) [9] . In 1999, he transferred the business to his son Spyros. Giannis Lacis died on April 17, 2003 at the age of 92 in his house in Athens [9] [2] [5] .
Condolences to the Latsis family were expressed by the Minister of the Merchant Fleet, Yorgos Anomeritis , Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos , leader of the New Democracy party Kostas Karamanlis and his predecessor Evert Miltiadis , telegrams of condolences were sent by Prince Charles and President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos [25] .
The heir to the state was the son of Spyros [5] [26] . The Latsis family created the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in 2005 in Athens with a branch in Liechtenstein . The widow and children of Yannis became members of the supervisory board of the foundation [15] [3] .
Charity
Latsis was engaged in charity work, in 1967 he began a scholarship program [27] , in 1975 he created the Latsis Foundation charity foundation in Geneva. The Fund provided assistance to victims of earthquakes in Greece ( Athens, 1999 ), Egypt [28] and Armenia . In 1986, the passenger ship Marianna 9 owned by Latsis was used as a houseboat for 900 victims of the September 13 earthquake in Kalamata who were left homeless [9] . Donated $ 1.5 million to The Prince's Trust , founded by Charles, Prince of Wales [2] [4] . The Lacis family donated several fire planes and police vehicles to the Greek state, the new City Hall in Pyrgos [9] , and the building of the burn clinic of the Triasio Hospital ( Θριάσιο ) in Elephis. Latsis made donations to the Pan-Greek Maritime Federation ( Π.Ν.Ο. ) [25] .

He was awarded the Golden Cross of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople , the Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix and the prize of the Athenian Academy [9] [4] .
