History

The Marine Hospital was founded in Kronstadt by Peter I in 1717. Originally it was located in wooden barracks in the southern part of the city (modern Summer Garden ), in 1723 (according to other data - in 1730) it was transferred to its current location, but also remained in wooden buildings. In 1761, after the fire, it was decided to build a stone hospital, but in 1764 there was a new fire, already in the whole city, and plans were postponed. A new hospital project in the 1780s compiled by architect M. N. Vetoshnikov , but he was not implemented. On January 9, 1832, Nicholas I ordered the immediate commencement of the construction of a stone hospital. At the end of 1832, it was clarified that the hospital should be of the 5th grade, for 1,500 full-time and 300 spare places. [2] [3]

Ultimately, on January 25, 1833, the project of the main building of the architect E. H. Anert was approved. Construction began in the spring of that year and was completed in 1839. The building was consecrated in October 1840. Simultaneously, work was carried out on the design of the hospital garden (the plan was approved in 1836, work began in 1839, the grilles and gates were installed in 1841) and office buildings as designed by Anert (in 1838 a bathhouse was built 1839 - the building of the pharmacy, laundry and brewery, in 1840-1841 - the building for the kitchen and bakery). In 1848-1849 (the decoration was completed in 1852) a two-storied building of services (glaciers and anatomical theater), designed by A. A. Martynov in the style of postclassicism, was built. In 1905, the Nikolaev chapel church was built in the pseudo-Russian style. [2]
