Story

England, the beginning of the reign of Edward I Plantagenet (1272-1307). Despite the fact that two centuries have passed since the capture of the country by William the Conqueror , the confrontation between the Saxons and the Normans did not disappear.

Walter Garney (Tyrone Power), the illegitimate son of a Saxon Earl of Lessford, who married a Norman widow, was deprived of his inheritance, and then expelled from England for refusing to serve the king. Together with him, his childhood friend leaves the rebellious Yeomen- archer Tristram Griffin (Jack Hawkins).

The fugitives reach Palestine , where they join the caravan going to China to Kublai Khan . The caravan, delivering gifts to the eastern lord, guards the army of nomads led by the Mongol military commander Bayan Stoglazim (Orson Welles). Two Englishmen manage to gain authority from the cruel, but fair commander, however, his methods of war are not to his liking.

In addition, in their tent they have to shelter one of the many concubines sent as a gift to Khubilai - the beautiful Mariam (Cecile Aubrey), the daughter of an English knight who was captured by the Saracens, dressed as a servant boy. Gradually, a feeling arises between Walter and Mariam, and the deception is revealed, but the wise Bayan generously gives life to the Englishman.

During the campaign of the Mongols in the southern Chinese cities (1275-1278), Walter and Tristram manage to escape, but only in order to get into Chinese captivity. When trying to escape, the last of them dies, and Walter, after long wanderings, returns to his homeland. Here he receives the news that King Edward, who received a message from the formidable Bayan, in which he honors the young Englishman with all sorts of praises, not only had mercy on him, but also knighted him and returned the inheritance.

On top of that, Walter receives a reward from Mariam, brought to him by the envoys of the Mongols. Having arranged family life in the family castle, Walter carefully preserves as a relic the weapons of his dead friend - the English long bow , a symbol of the military power of the country of the Plantagenet era.
