Francesco IV d'Este ( Italian: Francesco IV , October 6, 1779 - January 21, 1846 ) - Duke of Modena and Reggio in 1814 - 1846 , since 1815 also the Duke of Mirandola, and since 1829, the Duke of Massa and Prince Carrara.

The son of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and Maria d'Este .
He ascended the throne by decision of the Vienna Congress . Under Francesco IV, who brutally cracked down on the revolutionary movement, Modena became the center of reactionary forces throughout Italy . The 1831 revolution in the duchy forced Francesco IV to flee to Mantua in February 1831 . But already in March 1831 he returned, calling for help from the Austrian army. Mercilessly dealt with the participants in the revolution.
In February 1821 he was awarded the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called [1] .
In 1812, Francesco married Maria Beatrice of Savoy ( 1792 - 1840 ), the daughter of King Victor Emanuel I , who was his niece, since Emanuel's wife was his sister. Children:
- Maria Theresa ( 1817 - 1886 ), wife of Henry, Count de Chambord ;
- Francesco V ( 1819 - 1875 ), Duke of Modena, married to Adelgund of Bavaria ;
- Ferdinand Karl ( 1821 - 1849 ), married to Archduke Elizabeth Francis ;
- Maria Beatrice ( 1824 - 1906 ), wife of Juan, Earl of Montison .
