History

The Seven Ogles have been a famous family in Northumbria since the Norman Conquest of England . They settled in Ogle ( Northumberland County), and in 1341 received permission to strengthen their estate, which became known as Ogle Castle .

The Baronial title was created in 1461 for Sir Robert Ogle . The title was passed along the male line until death in 1597 by Cuthbert Ogl, 7th Baron Ogl (c. 1540-1597). He was succeeded by his only daughter, Catherine Ogl, the 8th Baroness Ogl (d. 1629). She married Sir Charles Cavendish (c. 1553-1617). Thus, the Cavendishs inherited the estates of the Ogl family. She was succeeded by her only son, William Cavendish (1592–1676). He served as Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire (1626–1642, 1660–1676), Derbyshire (1628–1638) and Northumberland (1670–1676). He was granted the titles of Viscount Mansfeld (1620), Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne (1628), Marquis of Newcastle upon Tyne (1643) and Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne (1665). He was succeeded by his only son, Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1630–1691). He was elected to the House of Commons of England from Derbyshire (1660–1661) and Northumberland (1661–1676), served as governor of Berick-upon-Tweed (1675–1688), Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland (1670–1689), Nottinghamshire (1677–1689) ), East Riding of Yorkshire , North Riding of Yorkshire and West Riding of Yorkshire (1688–1689).
