Biography

Born in the family of a priest of the All Saints cemetery church in Tula.

He graduated from the Tula Theological School (1901), the Tula Theological Seminary (1907) and the Moscow Theological Academy (1911) with a degree in theology degree from LXVI undergraduate.

In April 1912, he was appointed teacher in the department of church archeology in connection with the history of Christian art. In 1913 he collaborated in the journal Theological Herald (under the pseudonym NP ) [1] .

In October 1913 he defended his master's thesis, made on the basis of the master's work. He was approved by an associate professor and went to a foreign scientific mission - he studied museums and repositories of France, Germany, Italy. After returning from 1916 simultaneously with the Moscow Theological Academy, he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (until 1918). Since May 1917 - freelance extraordinary professor of the Moscow Theological Academy in the Department of Church Archeology.

From 1918 he taught church archeology and iconography at the Moscow People’s Orthodox Orthodox Academy; member of the restoration council of the All-Union Board of Museums (1918-1924); the head of the Kashin restoration expedition of the Museum Department of the People 's Commissariat of Education (1917-1920); full member and research associate of the Institute of Archeology and Art Studies; Associate Professor of the 1st Moscow State University (since 1923), Researcher and Academic Secretary (1930) of the Moscow Section of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture.

He was an employee of the Russian Historical Museum : in 1922-1930 - head of the Byzantine department (1922-1930), in 1926-1930 - scientific secretary. Full member of the Archeology Sector of the State Academy of Art.

From July 10, 1919 to April 11, 1938, he worked at the Rumyantsev Museum (later, at the VI Lenin State Library of the USSR ): Until 1922, Head of the Department of Antiquities, from 1923, Head of the Department of Rare Books and Graphics.

In 1938 he participated in archaeological excavations in Sudak .

Author of numerous articles on church archeology and iconography.

Buried at the Pyatnitsky cemetery .
