Biography

Born on May 3, 1914 in the village of Staroyuryevo , Kozlovsky Uyezd , Tambov Province (April 20, according to the old style). He was the son of a teacher. He began to write poetry in his school years. In 1929 he entered the Novikovsky Pedagogical College, and after graduation he entered the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute [1] . After graduation, he taught in high school, participated in the elimination of illiteracy, planned to enter graduate school [2] . Shortly before the start of World War II, he was called up for military service, which took place in the Kiev Military District . He was published in the magazines “Young Collective Farmer”, “Krasnaya Nov”, “Red Army Man and Red Navy” [1] .

In 1940 he received the first prize for the best poetry among young soldiers at a contest held by the newspaper of the Kiev military district "Red Army" [1] .

From the first days of World War II, he took part in the battles. He was captured near Kharkov , several times tried to escape from the prisoner of war camp. At the beginning of 1942 he fell into the partisan detachment that fought in the Kursk region . The detachment continued to write poetry and songs. It was published in a partisan newspaper [1] .

On February 21, 1943, in a battle near the village of Merkulovka, Kursk Region, Shulchev died [3] , saving a wounded comrade. In the package removed from the poet’s chest on the battlefield, several of his poems of the war era and the beginning of the poem “Orlovschina” were preserved. He was buried in the Ivanovo farm of the Dmitrievsky district of the Orel region [4] .

On the building of the Staroyuryevskaya secondary school, named after him and in which he worked for five years of his life, there is a memorial tablet dedicated to Valentin Shulchev [5] . Collections of his poems were published posthumously [1] . Some of his works have been translated into Bulgarian [6] .
