History
The order for the construction of the submarine was given on January 20, 1941 . The boat was laid down on January 20, 1941 at the Oderwerk shipyard in Stettin under building number 821, launched on June 26, 1943, and put into operation on October 11 of the same year. It was one of two boats (along with U-822 ) built at this shipyard. The boat served for almost a year in training fleets. For three months of military service, she participated in only two short combat patrols, on June 10, 1944, on the fourth day of the second campaign, it was destroyed by Royal Air Force aircraft.
Service History
The first military campaign began from Bergen on March 19, 1944. The boat went on patrol in the Atlantic Ocean. On April 10, she was attacked by an airplane, but drove him away with anti-aircraft fire and the aircraft did not drop depth charges. The military campaign ended in Brest on April 12.
The 2nd military campaign began from Brest on June 6, 1944. The boat received orders to attack the landing ships of the Anglo-Americans in the English Channel . On June 7, a group of German submarines was attacked by airplanes. U-821 also fired on planes, but couldn’t bring anyone down, unlike several other boats. During the attacks, the boat itself was not damaged. On June 10, 1944, the boat was attacked by the Liberator and four De Havilland Mosquito planes dropped deep bombs on the boat. The submarine tried to repel an air attack with anti-aircraft fire and shot down one British Mosquito plane. After the bombings, the U-821 submarine sank, 50 people died, one survived.
