Education
Secondary education in the Moscow school number 7, located at Kazan lane , building 10. He spent his childhood in Khamovniki district .
In 1952-1959 he actively participated in the work of the VOOP biological circle under the leadership of P. P. Smolin . Together with Boris Vilenkin, Peter Vtorov , Yuri Puzachenko , Olga Shokhina, Mikhail Chernyakhovsky , Leonid Lisovenko and Nikolai Drozdov , they became prominent representatives of the second generation of VOOPovtsev [6] . In VOOP, the troika Zlotyn-Vtorov-Lisovenko was led by Yuriy Ravkin , and under his leadership, they prepared their candidate works in the circle [7] . Due to frequent expeditions, in the 8th grade was left for the second year, and left for the summer in the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve .
In 1958–1963 he studied at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University , graduated from the Department of Biogeography [8] .
Scientific and organizational work
In 1963 he was sent to the Institute of Geography of the USSR Academy of Sciences, began working in the post just introduced in the USSR Academy of Sciences - trainee researcher [9] .
In 1970 he defended his thesis on the topic “Structure and productivity of high-mountain biogeocenoses of the internal Tien Shan” [10] .
In 1976, he was Deputy Secretary General of the 23rd session of the International Geographical Congress , held in Moscow.
In 1979, he was the scientific secretary of the “Geography” and “Island Ecosystems” symposia at the 14th session of the Pacific Scientific Congress , held in Khabarovsk .
He was one of the organizers of expeditions to the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean on the research vessel " Callisto ", flights 1976-1977 and 1980. He is a member of the informal “Kallisto-Cub” (with Yu. P. Badenkov (expedition leader), V. O. Targulian , Yu. G. Puzachenko , P. A. Kaplin and A. A. Velichko ) [11] .
Garden of Gethsemane , 1991
Moscow region, 2004
He transferred to the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University his collections of invertebrate animals and reptiles from the Tien Shan and tropical islands [12] .
In 1983, he replaced Yu. A. Isakov as head of the laboratory of biogeography at the Institute of Geography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He actively supported the work of N. I. Bazilevich , having organized the help of the laboratory staff from her [13] .
Pedagogical and scientific work
In 1992-1993 he gave lectures in the USA. He taught at the School of Social and Environmental Affairs, the Department of Geography, the Institute of Russia and Eastern Europe, the Department of Central Eurasian Studies, Indiana University.
Since 1996 - Professor of Geography at Indiana University in Bloomington and Biology, University of New Mexico . Teaches students in biogeography and ecology, conducts summer courses in experimental ecology of ecosystems and biology.
At the same time, he conducts research in the field of ecology of ecosystems, regional geography, studies global climate change and deals with issues of nature conservation in the United States and Russia [14] . She conducts scientific work on the following topics:
- Long-term environmental studies on field experimental sites in arctic, forest, steppe, desert and alpine ecosystems.
- Examination of environmental risk assessment and biodiversity conservation in areas of economic development.
