Biography
Born in 1894 in the village of Bebry, Friedrichstadt County, into a peasant family.
He graduated from Riga Real College (1912) and Riga Polytechnic Institute (1916). Since 1920, Associate Professor of the University of Latvia , Head of the Department of Forest Technology. In 1930 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Technical properties of Latvian pine depending on growing conditions."
Since 1931 - professor at the University of Latvia; from 1939 - professor at the Latvian Agricultural Academy (in 1940–1941 and 1944–1946 its vice-rector). During the German occupation he was held in prison. In 1946-1974 he was director of the Institute of Forestry Problems (Institute of Wood Chemistry) of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR . Since 1974, the chief editor of the journal "Chemistry of wood."
Academician-Secretary of the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (1958-1963).
Chess player. In 1921, in the simultaneous game of A. Alekhine, the only one out of 27 participants won.
Member of the CPSU. He was elected deputy of the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR of the 2nd convocation.
Winner of the 1951 Stalin Prize for the introduction of a new method for the production of the PASK therapeutic drug. Honored Scientist of the Latvian SSR (1945). He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Red Star, and medals.
He died in Riga in 1981.
