Compression (from fr. Comprimer - compress, squeeze) - the technology of industrial processing and gas treatment (compression), increasing the gas pressure using a compressor . It is one of the main operations when transporting hydrocarbon gases through pipelines, pumping them into oil and gas bearing structures to maintain reservoir pressure (with the aim of increasing oil condensate recovery), during the filling of underground gas storage facilities and during gas liquefaction. It is carried out in one or several stages, the type and power of the compressor are determined depending on the amount of gas to be compressed and the required degree of pressure increase (compression ratio). Compression is accompanied by an increase in gas temperature and, as a rule, requires its subsequent cooling ^{[1] [2]} .

Gas compression is also performed at automobile gas-filling compressor stations to produce gas-engine fuel.
