Biography
Sergey Zykov was born in 1830, came from the nobility of the Petersburg province . He was educated in the 1st Cadet Corps , from which he was promoted to officer on May 26, 1849; in 1856 he graduated from the Imperial Military Academy . In 1862, as a member of the commission of General Totleben , Zykov composed most of the first volume of the “Description of the Defense of Sevastopol”. In 1863, he participated in the suppression of the Polish uprising , during which he commanded a separate detachment, smashed a gang of rebels under m. Lochin, for which he was awarded a golden saber with the inscription "For Bravery" .
March 17, 1865 Zykov was appointed a member of the Military Scientific Committee of the General Staff and held this position for 35 years, having received the rank of Major General (August 30, 1875) and Lieutenant General (August 30, 1885); He retired at the age of 70 on May 5, 1900, with the production of generals from infantry, with a uniform and pension. For 1917 he lived in Petrograd .
From 1865 to 1868, Sergey Pavlovich Zykov edited the Russian Disabled, which at that time was a large political newspaper in which he collaborated: Nikolai Milyutin , Bushen , Koyalovich , Beketov, Suvorin , Burenin and others, and some of which were read in proofread by Emperor Alexander II .
In 1868, Zykov was on the commission of Adjutant General Skolkov for a detour and reorganization of Eastern Siberia. August 30, 1874 promoted to major general. In 1878, in anticipation of a possible war with England , Zykov was appointed chief of staff of the naval and coastal defense of Kronstadt . Zykov was at one time a permanent employee of the " Domestic Notes ", " St. Petersburg Gazette " and the "Military Collection" , since 1875 he edited the journal "Leisure and business" .
From 1894 to 1897 and from 1904 to 1907 he was editor of Russian Antiquity . Then he composed and published: “Perovsky’s Campaign in Khiva in 1839,” “Geographical and Statistical Outlines of the Kingdom of Poland” and “Description of the War of 1877–78. at European and Asian theaters. ” Then, under his editorship, Claude ’s Physical Geography, Earth and People and Universal Geography Reclus and Louis Blanc 's History of the French Revolution were published; he translated and published: “Tactics” by Renard and “History of the Campaign of 1815” by Sharras . In addition, he compiled and published a large number of popular brochures; together with A. A. Ilyin published the journal " World Traveler ".
