He studied at the gymnasiums of Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don . Then he continued to study science at the Mining College in the Yekaterinoslav province .

He was fond of Russian literature. In the collection “Taganrog Motives” he published, in particular, the article “Taganrog Talents” about A. P. Chekhov and N. F. Shcherbin ; several letters of Gutmacher Chekhov survived. He was published in Courier, Russian Word, Journal for All, New Word, Life, Russian Rumor and other periodicals.
