History

The title was passed along the male line until the death of Bartholomew Bourtschier (1374-1409), the 3rd Baron Bursier in 1409 . He was succeeded by his only daughter, Elizabeth Bourtschieu, 4th Baroness Bourrier (c. 1399-1433). After her death in 1433, the baronial title passed to her cousin , Henry Bourrier (c. 1404-1483). Henry Bursier held the position of Lord Treasurer of England (1445-1446, 1460-1461, 1471-1483). The titles of Viscount Bourrier ( 1446 ) and Count of Essex ( 1461 ) were created for him. After the death of Henry Bursier, 2nd Earl of Essex (c. 1472-1540), in 1540 the title was inherited by his only daughter, Anne Borschier, 7th Baroness Bursier (1517-1471). She was married to Lord William Parr, 1st Earl of Essex and 1st Marquis of Northampton (1512-1571). In 1552, their marriage was declared invalid by parliament. Their children were declared illegitimate and could not inherit the baronial title. After Ann died in 1571, the baronial title passed to her cousin, Walter Dever, Viscount Hereford (1541-1576), who in 1572 received the title of Earl of Essex. In 1646, after the death of Robert Dever, 3rd Earl of Essex (1591–1646), who did not leave offspring, the baronial title was inactive. The sisters of the deceased, Francis Devere, the Duchess of Somerset (1599-1679), and Lady Dorothy Devere (d. 1636), and their descendants, could claim it.
