Biography
Born in the small town of Woodville , Mississippi . Participated in the Civil War . Despite its origins, he fought on the side of the unionists . He participated in the battles for settlements of Fort Pickens ( Florida ) and Baton Rouge ( Louisiana ). Finished the war as a major . [one]
After the war he lived in New York ( Manhattan ). [1] He was a multiple winner of the Manhattan Chess Club Championships . [2] Won the New York State Championship in 1891.
In the period from 1884 to 1899. actively participated in chess competitions, including several strong international tournaments. [3]
For many years he was the oldest American chess player, who had the title of master. [1] According to A. Elo , the class of Hanem’s game was approximately at the 2360 rating level. [4]

Han also introduced into practice one of the varieties of the closed Sicilian protection system (1. e4 c5 2. Кc3 Кc6 3. f4 ). His studies on continuations associated with the move 2. d3 (after 1. e4 e6 and 1. e4 e5) are known. [eight]
