History of the Assumption Cathedral

Until 1761, parishioners of the Verkh-Isetsk plant belonged to the Catherine Mountain Cathedral . In 1761, a private parish was formed and, with the blessing of the Tobolsk and Siberian Metropolitan Paul, on June 24, 1761, the first wooden church was laid in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God, archpriest Theodore Kochnev was the construction customer, who later led the parish. In 1763, the church was consecrated. In 1766, a chapel was laid in the name of the holy martyrs Boris and Gleb. Instead of a wooden church in 1831, a stone church was laid in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God by the priest of Catherine’s Cathedral Sergius Dyakonov, and on March 17, 1838 it was consecrated by the Perm Archbishop Arkady . At the beginning of the 20th century, the Assumption Church had tin vessels, two pairs of wedding crowns (iron and tin), and silver-plated vessels worth up to 2 thousand rubles. There were three church houses at the church, and the parable itself consisted of 4 priests, 1 deacon and 4 psalm-goers [1] . On May 11, 1912, by the decree of the Holy Synod, the church was granted the status of a cathedral.

After 1919, a religious society was formed at the Assumption Cathedral, up to 500 people gathered for divine services. In December 1926, the throne was consecrated in the church in the name of St. Nicholas of Myra, arranged in the left nave. In September 1920, an inventory of the property of the Assumption Cathedral was carried out, in which it was indicated that the iconostasis in the church was two-tier, the bell tower had 9 copper bells of various sizes, weighing 511 pounds. In 1923, the Soviet government seized silver and stones weighing 3 pounds 28 pounds. The cathedral was closed on February 17, 1930 during the campaign for the mass closure of churches by decision of the Presidium of the City Council signed by A.N.Bychkova and approved by the regional executive committee on March 17, 1930. After that, a kitchen factory was organized in the church, then the House of Culture. In the 1940s, a bakery was located in the building. In 1991, by decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Region, the cathedral building was recognized as an object of cultural heritage and an architectural monument. In July 2009, the building was transferred to the ownership of the Yekaterinburg diocese without water, gas, heating and sewage, in ruined form.

Rebirth

Since 2009, services have been held in the one-story building of the former factory garage, converted into a prayer room. On October 14, 2013, the Divine Liturgy was first performed in the Assumption Cathedral. And since November 2013, services are held daily [2] .

Architecture

The cathedral is located in the elevated part of the relief rising from the Iset River , and above the coastal part with the buildings of the Verkh-Isetsky plant. In the 20th century, undergoing a complete reconstruction, it occupies a significant role in the pre-factory area of the Verkh-Isetsky Metallurgical Plant (Subbotnikov Square) in the eastern part. The large volume of the church in the building balances the building of the House of Culture of the Verkh-Isetsky plant and dominates the space of the surrounding neighborhoods, including factory buildings, the main entrance and the settlement. The church was created according to the project of M.P. Malakhova , but was rebuilt in the second half of the XIX century in the eclectic style. To date, the porticoes, the bell tower, the dome, the four corner heads have been lost, the facades have been changed. From the original construction, only fragments were preserved, the drum of the dome. It is cut by 12 rectangular openings, decorated with pilasters and sandriks. Window sills of openings are combined by a profiled draft. The drum also completes a profiled cornice. Its frieze part is decorated with stucco ornaments. Details of the design of the pedestals of the corner heads are included in the southern and northern walls. The cathedral is a rectangle covering a square temple part and an altar. The center of the temple is distinguished by four cruciform supports bearing sails supporting the drum. Partially preserved are the dome rotunda, whose rectangular openings are extended downward by optical fibers and decorated on the sides with pilasters with flutes on pedestals. The cathedral is an example of Russian classicism, an architectural landmark of the Verkh-Isetsky district [3] .
