Biography
With his parents and two sisters, Whitley emigrated to Sydney in 1921. There he worked at the Australian Museum, among other things, with McCullough and studied at the Sydney Technical College and the University of Sydney Zoological University. After the death of McCullough in October 1925, he followed in his footsteps and took the place of ichthyologist , and then curator of ichthyology.
In 1923, he published his first scientific article, The Praying Mantis. In all, he wrote over 550 articles and five books in his life, mainly about fish from Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the South Pacific. He described over 320 new genera and species of fish and studied many aspects of Australian marine and freshwater fish, including ecology , fisheries, and taxonomy .
During his supervision, he made trips, usually at his own expense, with his friends Tom Iredal and Anthony Musgrave. It also doubled the number of registered and identified species in the museum collection to approximately 37,000 specimens.
Wheatley was a member and president of the Royal Zoological Society and several other organizations in New South Wales.
He resigned in 1964, but continued his scientific work. In addition, he had other interests: he played the piano, often went to concerts, theater or art exhibitions.
