Description
Sturisomatichthys leightoni
Sturisomatichthys panamense The total length of representatives of this genus ranges from 18 to 25 cm. In appearance, they are similar to catfish of the genus Sturisoma . They differ from the latter in the absence of a long snout. The head is relatively large, slightly flattened from above. The snout is short, pointed. The outer edges of the head of the males are covered with long and numerous odontodams (skin teeth). The eyes are large, located at the top of the head. The body is elongated. The belly is covered with 3-4 rows of bone plates. Caudal peduncle slender and thin, dorsal fin long enough. The pectoral fins are large and long. Odontodes are present on the spines of the pectoral fins of males. The ventral fins are significantly inferior to the pectoral ones in size. The extreme rays of the caudal fin are very elongated.
Color brown with various shades. The fins are lighter than the main background with stripes.
LifestyleThese are bottom fish. They prefer to live in fresh and transparent reservoirs. Usually keep rivers with a slow or medium flow. Found in areas with thickets of plants. Active during the day. Most of the time they “hang” on the leaves of plants or reed stalks. They feed on algae that scrape off the leaves and roots of floating plants, as well as detritus .
ReproductionFemale lays eggs laying among stones.
DistributionDistributed in the northwestern part of South America, on the slopes of the Andes , one species is in Panama . They live in the rivers Kaketa , San Juan , Cauca and Magdalena .
