Date

There is no exact information, but it is known that the Kotlinsky battle took place on July 22, and the siege was before it. It follows that the siege was launched in late June, lifted in early July.

Background

Russia declared war on Sweden in 1656. Russian troops unsuccessfully besieged Riga. But soon the cause of the war disappeared. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich sent auxiliary troops. These troops, under the leadership of Sheremetev, were taken by Derpt, and the army of P.I. Potemkin, with Don Cossacks, set off from Novgorod on a campaign.

The forces of the parties

Russians could have about 300 warriors in 15 plows. The size of the Swedish garrison is unknown.

Siege

Potemkin with the Don Cossacks and the Tsar’s army sailed from Lake Ladoga to the Neva. They landed on Orekhovy Island and stood under the walls of Noteburg for several days. However, Potemkin soon retreated back to Ladoga, and then again went to the Neva and won a naval victory over the Swedes on the island of Kotlin.

Consequence

Although this did not bring victory (due to the lack of a large army), however, the results of the campaign in 1656 were considered successful. For the tsarist army captured almost the entire course of the Western Dvina , including Dinaburg and Kockenhausen, which opened up an important communication line for Russia to enter the Baltic states.
