Planilaricaria [1] ( lat. Planiloricaria cryptodon ) is a species of ray-finned fish from the family of chain mail catfish , the only representative of the genus Planiloricaria [1] ( Planiloricaria ). The scientific name of the genus comes from lat. planus - “flat” and lat. lorica - "leather armor".

The total length reaches 21.5 cm. The head is wide, round, the snout is elongated. Eyes are small, without iris . Mature males have an enlarged lower lip. The teeth are small, absent on the premaxilla . The trunk is elongated, slender, strongly compressed laterally, the caudal stem is thin. Dorsal fin large, long, first ray very long. Adipose fin missing. The pectoral fins are elongated. The ventral fins are small, in females they are longer. Anal fin pointing down with short base. The genital area of males is elongated and narrow, in females - round and large. The caudal fin is short; the tip of its upper lobe is rather long.
The color is dark gray with brownish specks from the nose to the tail in the upper body. The lower part and the belly are white and cream-colored.
Biology is not well understood. This is a bottom fish. Prefers fresh and clean reservoirs. He loves large rivers with a rapid current and sandy soil. Active at dusk and at night. It feeds on insect larvae, daphnia and other aquatic organisms.
It lives in the basins of the rivers Mamor , Amazon , Ucayali and Purus - within Brazil , Peru and Bolivia .
