Biography
Luka Joakimidi was born on June 22, 1909 in Batum. In 1919, he moved to Tiflis with his mother. In his youth, was fond of various sports, ultimately preferred to swimming and water polo.
In 1934, after an internship in Moscow and Leningrad , he began to engage in coaching activities. He stood at the origins of the creation of the Dynamo water polo club (Tbilisi), where, up to the beginning of the 1950s, he combined his performance as a goalkeeper and coaching. Olympic champions Nodar Gvakharia , Leri Gogoladze and Pyotr Mshvenieradze [1] were among the water polo players he brought up.
From the early 1950s to the end of the 1970s, he was the senior swimming coach of the Georgian SSR. For many years he headed the Tbilisi swimming school . Among his students were such famous swimmers as European Championships medalist Yuri Abovyan, European Championships two-time medalist Vladimir Lavrinenko , Olympic Games medalist Boris Nikitin .
He also engaged in judicial activities, participated in the judging of swimming competitions at the Olympic Games in Moscow (1980) [2] .
Since May 1991, he lived in the Stavropol Territory. Died November 13, 1992 in the village of Yutsa .
Family
One of the pupils of Luke Joakimidi was his son Alexander (born 1948), who in 1968 won the USSR Championship twice at 400 and 1500 meters freestyle [3] . In the future, he also took up coaching activities, since 1990 he has been working in the Secondary Youth School No. 3 of the city of Belorechensk , and is an Honorary Educational Worker of the Russian Federation [4] .
