Historical Coats of Arms
First coat of arms of Simbirsk

The first known coat of arms of Simbirsk (at that time it was called Sinbirsk) was granted to the city in 1672 for “twice brave defense from the robber Stenka Razin : for the first time with governor Ivan Miloslavsky from Stenka Razin himself, and for the second time a year from Yesaul Razin’s gang Fedka Sheludyaka . " The coat of arms is a lion standing on three paws and looking to the right side with its tongue sticking out, and a sword in the left paw, a three-petal crown above the lion’s head. The emblem symbolizes the courage of the Simbiryan. Such an image is on the preserved seal of Simbirsk, which is under an excerpt from census and exempted books of 1695 . [2]
Coat of arms of Simbirsk
The heraldic office created by Peter I chose the column (pillar) crowned with the imperial crown for the coat of arms of Simbirsk and was designed by the heraldic artist Franz Santi . In 1712, this emblem appeared on the banner of the Simbirsk Infantry Regiment. Under the emblem was the adage “Supported by honor”. This coat of arms was placed in the arms of Minich in 1730. Most likely, F. Santi for the coat of arms of Sinbirsk (a column with a crown), borrowed from the book Tesing J., Kopievsky I. “Symbols and Emblems”, Amsterdam , 1705
On December 22, 1780, the emblems of Simbirsk vicegerency are “highly affirmed”, where this emblem was officially approved: “in a blue field, on a white 4-faced pedestal, there is a white column with a golden crown at the top” [3] . [2]
In 1859 , in the course of the proposed stamp reform, Köne Bernhard Vasilievich prepared a draft of the coat of arms of Simbirsk. From the description: “In the azure shield there is a silver pillar on which is the imperial crown decorated with two St. Andrew’s ribbons . The shield is crowned with a golden tower crown of three prongs and is surrounded by golden ears of wheat connected by the Alexander ribbon . ”
Coat of arms of Ulyanovsk
During the establishment of Soviet power, all the old paraphernalia was destroyed. Only in 1966-1967, to the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution, a competition was held. The new coat of arms was to show the industrial and agricultural achievements of the city. The most acceptable project for the authorities was the coat of arms project, which depicted a monument to Lenin (sc. M. Manizer , architect V. Vitman), gear, ears, Volga waves and the UAZ gull.
Modern Coat of Arms
In the post-Soviet image of the coat of arms of the city preserved the attributes of the tsarist time - a silver column with a gold Imperial crown. It was first adopted by the City Duma on March 5, 1997, but because the coat of arms did not meet heraldic requirements (the column did not rest on the ground, but hung in the air), on December 24, 2003 a new coat of arms of the city was adopted.
