History
In 1631, the Dutch colonists founded the first settlement in the state of Delaware in Lewis. This was the first and only settlement in the region for a long time. Lewis was the main contender for the county seat when three districts in Delaware were later created. However, Lewis was on the county’s border, so residents filed a petition to transfer the administration to the geographical center. In 1791, land was acquired in the center of the district for a new settlement and construction of the district court building began. The city was named Georgetown in honor of Commissioner George Mitchell, who was one of the activists transferring the county center to Georgetown.
