Lancia Zeta is a front-wheel drive minivan , developed and produced in 1995-2002 at the French-Italian joint venture Sevel Nord in Valenciennes , France . The car, built on the U60 platform and was part of the first-generation Euroven family, was positioned as the most prestigious of them, the limousine among minivans. Zeta did not install low-power engines available for analog models, and in similar configurations, its cost was noticeably (up to 20 percent difference) exceeded that of related Euro-cars [1] [2] [3] .

The name Zeta corresponds to the Lancia car name policy of the Greek alphabet [2] . It should be noted that the car of this brand, produced in the early twentieth century, was also called [4] .
Model History
Development
The first step in the development of European minivans was made by the French aerospace company Matra , which also had an automotive division (which was part of the PSA Peugeot-Citroën concern), which in 1980 created a prototype of a single-volume Projet P18 with a plastic body . However, he was not interested in the leadership of PSA and after some modifications was sold to the main competitor - Renault , which in 1984 introduced the Renault Espace minivan, which became the ancestor of all European minivans. The car became very successful, and in order to compete with it, it was decided to develop its own single-volume car project. However, work progressed with difficulty, and there were no good ideas. In 1986, Heuliez developed a prototype of a monocab, based on the Citroën BX , but it was rejected due to insufficient capacity [5] [6] .
The solution to the problem could be an alliance with another automaker, and the Italian company Fiat was ideally suited for the role of partner. Peugeot-Citroën already had a successful collaboration with Fiat in South America - a joint venture company Sevel (Société Européenne de Véhicules Légers). In December 1988, the Sevel Nord plant was built in the French city of Valenciennes [5] [6] .
Work on the project of a new minivan, designated U60, began in 1987. The car was supposed to be not too small, like the Nissan Prairie , and not too big, like the Toyota Previa , moreover, it was planned to manufacture it under several brands with some differences in accordance with the corporate style and principles of each brand. Above the exterior of the model, design studios Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo worked, and Italian body studios Pininfarina , Bertone , Italdesign and IDEA were also involved. A large number of layouts were produced, and by 1989 a consensus was reached on design [5] [6] .
Then began the development of the basic elements of the design of the car, as well as a period of marketing research. At first it was assumed that PSA will use the Talbot brand, however, due to falling demand and the deteriorating reputation of this brand, it was decided to release Euroven under the Peugeot and Citroën brands. Concern Fiat also decided to produce a model under two brands - Fiat and Lancia, the latter being positioned as the most luxurious and prestigious car of all [6] .
Production
The car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 10, 1994, along with three other U60 project minivans - the Fiat Ulysse , Peugeot 806 and Citroën Evasion . New items received in the media the unofficial common name " Eurovens " ( English eurovans ), which subsequently became fixed officially. All of them were produced at the same Sevel Nord plant in Valenciennes, and the release of the Lancia Zeta began later than its counterparts in 1995 [7] .
From 1995 to 2002, only 22 014 units of this model were produced - less than any other euroven [8] [9] . According to OICA , from 1998 to 2002, the following number of Lancia Zeta cars were produced:
- 1998 - 2490 [10] ;
- 1999 - 3299 [11] ;
- 2000 - 2265 [12] ;
- 2001 - 1852 [13] ;
- 2002 - 5232 (models Zeta and Phedra in total) [14] .
Construction
Body
Lancia Zeta had a monocoque bearing body . Its design is similar to that of related minivans, there were only external differences in the design of the grille , as well as the front and rear lighting [9] . Body galvanized . The model had good visibility and a very bright interior due to the large glass area. Zeta could equip with the hatch in a roof and even with the roof executed half of glass [15] .
Sliding rear side doors made landing a minivan more comfortable than competing models such as the Volkswagen Sharan . The tailgate opened up. It is noted that in the cars before 1996 release in the sliding doors there was a backlash with time, and the back door began to creak when driving over bumps [7] [15] .

Engines
Zeta installed 4 engines - 2 petrol and 2 diesel. From 1995 to 2000, the model was equipped with a 2-liter 8-valve petrol turbo XU10 J2TE and a 2.1-liter diesel turbo XUD11 BTE. In 1999, the DW10BTED two-liter turbo diesel became available. In 2000, the gasoline engine was replaced by an atmospheric 16-valve engine of the same volume EW10 J4 [3] [9] [15] .
Automotive experts point out the high reliability of all the engines that Lancia Zeta was equipped with, and their unpretentious maintenance, but report that exhaust manifold cracks are characteristic of gasoline engines. The XU10 J2TE engine was equipped with a relatively trouble-free turbine, but its relatively high fuel consumption was criticized [7] [15] [16] .

Chassis
The minivan was equipped with an independent front and semi-dependent rear suspension with anti-roll bars . The suspension is estimated by experts as quite soft and energy-intensive. Resource ball bearings averages from 40 to 80 thousand km, the same amount are the stabilizer bar bushings. The rear suspension is more durable - silent blocks of the beam can withstand 150-200 thousand kilometers [7] [15] .
All Zeta minivans were equipped with only a 5-speed manual gearbox [3] . It is easy to maintain: the lubricant is designed for the entire life of the engine, so the car owner is only required to monitor the tightness of the gearbox [15] .
The car was equipped with a rack and pinion steering with power steering . The model has very good handling by the standards of minivans. Steering tips on average serve about 40 thousand km, which gives autoexperts a reason to call them short-lived [15] .
Brake system
Lancia Zeta cars were equipped with disc brakes , and only ventilated disc brakes were used in front. The braking system is rated as fairly efficient, thanks in part to the anti-lock system that was installed on all Zeta vehicles. When replacing the pads, experts recommend cleaning and lubricating the guides, as well as checking the condition of the anthers of the guide calipers [15] .
Salon
Salon Lancia Zeta had 3 rows of seats and 6 or 7 seats, depending on the configuration. Salon transformable - the rear rows of seats can be folded or dismantled, thereby increasing the capacity of the luggage compartment. Being the most prestigious of all evrovenov first generation, Zeta had a rich interior equipment, for example, leather seats; all cars were equipped with air conditioning . A large glazing area provided good visibility and insolation of the interior space of a minivan, and sliding rear doors provided easy access to all passenger seats [15] . The gearbox lever placed on the center console was an additional factor affecting the comfort of the passenger compartment, since due to this location there was a passage between the front seats [9] .
Cars produced in 1995 have problems with the reliability of the third-row seat anchorages. Another disadvantage was the location of the buttons of the immobilizer near the coasters, because of which they can be filled with a drink [7] .

Test drive Lancia Zeta 2.0 JTD (it.) |
The crash test of the Peugeot 806, which is a constructive analogue of the Lancia Zeta, was conducted by Euro NCAP in 1999 and revealed some drawbacks of the model. The head of the dummy reached the airbag until it was fully opened, the chest experienced significant stresses from the seat belt , and the driver's head restraint was outside the car. The danger of injuring the legs of the driver was noted, but the positive quality of the minivan was noticed - the high strength of the power structure of the body, which is especially important in collisions at high speeds, as well as in side impacts [18] [19] [20] .
The tests included hitting the car against a deformable barrier at a speed of 64 km / h with a 40 percent overlap. The assessment was influenced by the displacement of the steering column, as well as a high level of load from the seat belt. Burst weld niche for the legs, because of which the driver's ankle was at risk of serious injury. In addition, rigid elements in the steering column endanger the driver’s right foot. Headrest driver's seat when struck broke out of the mount and flew out the window. In the minus of the car went that the middle rear seat is not equipped with a three-point belt and a safety belt, which also can be removed and removed [18] [19] .
To assess the safety of a car in a side collision, a carriage was struck with a deformable front weight of 950 kg at a speed of 50 km / h. The door of the minivan was damaged below and pressed inside the cabin. The head of the driver dummy is inadvertently in contact with the seat belt anchorage and the top of the center pillar. It turned out that the front armrest can be dangerous for the driver's stomach. No other claims were made [18] [19] .
Recommended by the manufacturer of children's seats ensured a good level of safety of small passengers, in particular, protected them from hitting his head on the front seats. Not without flaws that lowered the assessment: standard airbags in the evrovenov include front airbags that may endanger the child located in the front passenger seat [21] , but the manufacturer did not supply the vehicle with enough warning signs [18] [19 ] .
The hood and bumper evrovena not save pedestrians from serious injuries when hitting, so he got a low rating - just one star. The manufacturer was advised to pay special attention to this aspect of safety [18] [19] .
According to the EuroNCAP report, the standard Lancia Zeta, which was sold in the European Union in 1999, includes 2 front airbags, seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, as well as power steering [18] [19] .
