Joseph Leroy Hansen ( born Joseph Leroy Hansen ; June 16, 1910 - January 18, 1979 ) is an American Trotskyist , one of the leaders of the Socialist Workers Party .

Short Biography

Joseph Hansen was born in Richfield, Utah . He was the eldest of 15 children in a poor family of tailor Konrad Hansen, an immigrant from Norway. The only one of all the children paid attention to the college . The Great Depression marked the beginning of his political radicalization - from that time on he became a staunch socialist and joined the Trotskyist group of James P. Cannon .

In the second half of the 1930s , Hansen traveled to Trotsky with his wife in Mexico. From 1937 until the death of Trotsky, Hansen worked as his secretary and security guard. When the Stalinist agent Ramon Mercader mortally wounded Trotsky , Hansen, together with Charles Cornell, did not allow the killer to escape. Returning to the United States , Hansen worked as a merchant seaman . At this time, he became editor of the newspaper SRP "Militant" ("The Militant"). From 1940 to 1975, Hansen was a member of the National Committee of the Socialist Workers Party . In 1940-1941 and 1955-1959 he was the editor of the Fourth International PSA magazine.

After the split of the Fourth International in 1953, he made every effort to reunite the International Committee and the International Secretariat . In 1963 , when the two trends merged, Hansen became one of the leaders of the Reunited Fourth International and became editor of his English-language journal World Outlook .

Joseph Hansen was a supporter of the 1959 Cuban Revolution , and was the author of a book about it, The Dynamics of the Cuban Revolution. Marxist Appreciation ”(“ Dynamics of the Cuban Revolution. A Marxist Appreciation ”). Together with Farrell Dobs, he visited Cuba in the early 1960s . They played an active role in the establishment and operation of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee .

Joseph Hansen died of an infectious disease in New York on January 18, 1979 . His wife and close associate, Reba Hansen, remained a member of the PSA until her death in 1990 .
