International Airport "La Aurora"

La Aurora International Airport [1] ( Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora ) ( IATA : GUA , ICAO : MGGT ) is the airport in Guatemala City , the capital and largest city of Guatemala in Central America . The main airport of the country [2] . Opened after reconstruction in 1959. Located within the city, in the urban zone number 13 ( Zona 13 ) [2] , 6.4 kilometers south of the city center. To the west of the airport, along the Petapa Highway ( Avenida Petapa ) is located the urban zone No. 12 ( Zona 12 ), in which the industrial enterprises of the agglomeration (including the makiladora ) are located. The annual passenger traffic is about 2.2 million passengers according to 2014 data [1] .

The airport is owned by the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing , exploits - the General Directorate of Civil Aviation . Height above sea level 1509 meters.

The airport has 18 seats on the northern platform for passenger aircraft and 1 seat for a transport plane . In the northwestern part is parking . On the southern platform are light aircraft [2] .

The airport has one runway with an asphalt surface 2987 meters long and 60 meters wide.

History

Dante Nannini

In 1910, Alberto de la Riva ( Alberto de la Riva ) and Victor Ortiz ( Víctor Ortiz ) built the plane and made the first known flight in Guatemala. In 1914, the Aviation Academy was founded on the Champ de Mars ( Campo de Marte ), east of the city instructed by Dante Nannini . In 1923, construction of the airport on the Field of Mars began. In 1927, Pickwick Airways began regular flights between Guatemala, Mexico and the United States . The company made three flights a week. Later, the company began to make daily flights to San Salvador . In the same year, Pan American Airways began operating flights between Guatemala and Brownsville , Texas. In 1929, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation was established, as part of the Ministry of Communications and Public Works. In the 1930s, the airport was a grassy runway. After the start of World War II , the airport located the Guatemala Air Base ( Eng. Guatemala City Air Base ) of the United States Air Force . The 805th engineering and airfield battalion In early 1942, he built a runway with an asphalt surface 2000 meters long. After the uprising of 1949 and the assassination of Francisco Javier Aran the airbase was closed. In 1959, the runway was extended another 1,000 meters. Pan American Airways’s first jet passenger airliner, the Douglas DC-8 , landed in 1959. In 1968, the construction of a new passenger air terminal of 24,000 square meters was completed [3] .

The terminal was reconstructed in 2005 to increase passenger traffic [4] . The runway and taxiway were completely reconstructed in March 2010 [5] .
