Biography

Born in Germany. Pupil O. Kulpe . Prior to the establishment of the Nazi regime, he worked at the universities of Würzburg , Bonn , Munich , in 1922-1938. in Vienna , after the Anschluss of Austria, in the Minnesota (since 1940) and Los Angeles Universities (since 1945) the USA . His wife Charlotte Buhler is a specialist in child psychology.

In psychology, a follower of the Würzburg school of the so-called "Holistic psychological analysis" associated with the theory of gestalt . He developed the original concept of language, largely departing from the Saussure dichotomy " language and speech ." He proposed the theory of speech act , introduced the concept of connotation , one of the first to study the deictic units of the language. He made a significant contribution to the development of the child’s mental development problem by developing an ambiguous concept of distinguishing the three main stages of mental development (“instinct”, “training”, “intelligence”).

Buhler's work on linguistics influenced the representatives of the Prague school .
