It is located on the north-eastern slope of Gombori Mountain, at an altitude of 560 m above sea level, 10 km from Telavi and 79 km east of Tbilisi . Alazani river flows near the village.

It is known for its estate, owned by Chavchavadze , and its white wine, Tsinandali [3] [4] [5] .

History

Main manor house

Alexander Chavchavadze inherited Tsinandali from his father, Prince Garsevan . The new owner repaired the estate, built a new house and set up a decorative garden (1835). Chavchavadze often hosted guests, including foreign ones ( Griboedov [6] , Pushkin , Lermontov , Odoevsky and Alexander Dumas Sr. [7] visited here), entertained them with music, witty conversation and, in particular, fine wines produced in his farmstead marani (winery). Familiar with European orders, Chavchavadze built the country's largest winery, where he combined European and centuries-old Georgian traditions of winemaking. Chavchavadze's signature wine was dry white tsinandali [8] .

The village and the estate of Chavchavadze suffered from the raid of the highlanders of Imam Shamil on July 2, 1854. The attackers were commanded by Gazi-Mohammed , the son of Shamil. The Highlanders looted the property and abducted the wife of Alexander's son, Prince David Chavchavadze , her widowed sister Varvara Orbeliani, their children and many relatives. This event caused a strong resonance not only in Russia, but also in the West. On March 22, 1855, after difficult negotiations, the prisoners were exchanged for the son of Shamil Jamal al-Din and 40,000 (demanded a million) rubles in silver [9] .

After the death of David Chavchavadze (1884), due to non-payment of debt to the Russian Public Bank, the estate became the property of the imperial family . The manor house was reconstructed by the architect A. G. Ozerov . Tsinandali Garden was renovated in 1887 and transferred to state ownership in 1917.

In 1947, a museum was organized at the estate [10] .
