Early life and career
Brosnahan was born in Kansas City, Missouri [5] in the family of Earl Francis Brosnahan (1929 - 06/20/2018) and June Brosnahan (Mullen). She graduated from the Academy of St. Theresa , a Catholic school for girls. She studied at the University of Kansas , and then transferred to Arizona State University , where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma and in 1985 received a degree in journalism [6] .
In 1986, she worked in the accessories department at Mademoiselle in Manhattan , in which she was listed as Katie Brosnahan.
In 1991, she quit Mademoiselle, at that time having the position of senior fashion editor / head of accessories. Working on Mademoiselle, she noticed that there were no stylish handbags on the market, and decided to create her own line of handbags [7] .
Kate and Andy Spade founded Kate Spade New York in 1993.
In 1999, she sold 56% to the Neiman Marcus Group , and the rest of the company in 2006 [8] .
In 2016, she and her partners launched the new fashion brand Frances Valentine [2] .
Personal life and death
Actress Rachel Brosnahan is Spade's niece. [9]
Spade married Andy Spade, brother of actor and comedian David Spade , in 1994. Their only daughter, Francis Beatrix Spade, was born on February 18, 2005. For the last ten months of Kate’s life, the couple lived separately, in neighboring houses, but did not plan to get divorced, maintaining friendly relations and raising their daughter Frances together [10] .
Spade committed suicide on June 5, 2018, hanging herself in her apartment in New York [11] [12] . Near her was found a suicide note addressed to her daughter [13] . As reported later, many years of depression caused Spade to commit suicide, caused by problems in business and personal life, because of which she was also addicted to alcohol [14] . Her husband claims that she had no problems with alcohol or drugs, but for the past five years she has suffered from depression and anxiety, regularly visited a specialist in this regard and took medications [15] .
Spade's father, 89-year-old Earl Francis Brosnahan, passed away on June 20, 2018, the day before her funeral [16] .
