Biography

Born in 1911 in Tiflis. Since 1935, he was a rural doctor, resident of the University Therapeutic Clinic, resident of the hospital platoon of the medical battalion, assistant of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of Kaunas University, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, since 1953 rector of Kaunas Medical Institute.

Heading the Kaunas Medical Institute, he does a great job of forming a team, selecting its professors and teachers, creating an educational and material base, and training highly qualified specialists. He was actively engaged in medical practice, took an active part in the organization of preventive measures in the republic.

He has published a large number of monographs and scientific articles on pressing issues of medical science. In 1967, he was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, and then - the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences. For many years, productively engaged in research work, he formed a cardiology school, was a long-term chairman of the Lithuanian Society of Cardiology. Established on his initiative at the Kaunas Medical Institute, the Central Research Laboratory has grown into a modern Research Institute of Physiology and Pathology of the Cardiovascular System.

For the organization of the treatment of patients with myocardial infarction and the development of new methods of therapy as part of the team, he was awarded the USSR State Prize in the field of technology in 1969.

He was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Lithuanian SSR of the 4th-9th convocations. Member of the CPSU since 1951.

He died in Kaunas in 1984.
