Initial and earlier

There are many variations of the song, in which the plot varies greatly. In all cases, the hero tells how he ruined his life in the house of the “Rising Sun” and warns against such a fate; however, in different versions it is either a woman (including in the original folklore version), or a man (including in the version of The Animals). "The House of the Rising Sun" is understood by some as a brothel , others as a prison , others as a tavern or a gambling house . It is also unknown about the real or fictional building in New Orleans . In the city at different times in the XIX century there were two establishments with the same name, but both did not last long, and nothing is known about their bad reputation. Neither building has been preserved.

The famous folklorist and blues collector Alan Lomax wrote in 1941 that the words of this song (to the music of a traditional English ballad) were written by two Kentucky residents - Georgia Turner and Bert Martin. There are other versions of the origin of the song. The first known record dates back to 1934 . The song was performed by many bluesmen of the 1930s and 1940s (including one of Lidbelly’s versions of a recording made shortly before his death), and then a huge number of rock and pop musicians of the second half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries .

The Animals Band Version

The most famous version was The Animals, although two years earlier this hit was recorded by Bob Dylan (1962), a version of which The Animals arranged (in turn, Dylan “borrowed” the arrangement from Dave Van Ronk ).

... Researchers wondered: what is hidden under the "House of the Rising Sun"? Dave Van Ronk was tormented by the question: “Like everyone else, I thought that by“ home “was meant a brothel. But some time ago I was in New Orleans to attend a jazz festival. My wife Andrei and Odette and I were drinking in a pub when a guy appeared with a bunch of old photographs - pictures of the city at the beginning of the century. There, along with the French market, Lulu White's Mahogany Hall, customs and the like, there was a photo of a rough stone entrance, engraved in the center with an image of the rising sun. Intrigued, I asked what kind of building it was. It turned out to be a New Orleans women's prison (Orleans Parish women's prison). It turned out that I was fundamentally wrong from the very beginning. ” Judging by the lyrics, in the original she was performed by a woman [2] .

In the film “No Direction Home,” Van Ronck also details the collisions with House Of The Rising Sun.
