Northern Sporades [1] ( Greek Βόρειοι Σποράδες , Vorii-Sporades [2] ; Greek Σποράδες - “scattered”) is an archipelago in the Aegean Sea , lying along the eastern coast of Greece north of Euboea .

Apparently, the nature of the location of the islands made their name synonymous with randomness ; and even used with this meaning in terms: for example, a sporadic group .
