As of May 2018, the genus includes 2 species [1] :
- Ramirezi microgeophagus ( Mikrogeophagus ramirezi ) [1]
- Microtrophagus Altispinoza ( Mikrogeophagus altispinosus ) [2] [2]
Both species lay eggs on flat stones or leaves, and not under stones or in holes of sunken logs or snags, like fish from the close apistogram .
