Initially, the service was Nokia software called Nokia Sports Tracker , and was used for Symbian S60 series smartphones , which could record the user's movements using the device’s GPS or an external GPS receiver , fixing its route, speed, time, energy consumption and etc., including during sports training, such as running, cycling, etc. [1] [2]
History
Nokia announced in June 2010 [3] that it was closing the Nokia Sports Tracker service, but Sports Tracking Technologies Ltd. continued to support the application. called Sports Tracker, which was founded by three Nokia employees. These developers continued to work on the service and created applications for the platforms iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The functionality was added the ability to communicate with friends, download media files, etc. [4] [5]
In 2013, the number of service downloads was estimated at 1-5 million [6] .
On May 4, 2015, Amer Sports announced that it had acquired Sports Tracker [7] .
Service Accuracy
In 2013, a study was conducted on the accuracy of trackers on smartphones , which analyzed the work of ten different services. According to these results, Sports Tracker took 2-4 place in accuracy of distance calculation, and 9th in accuracy of calculation of height difference [6] .
