Biography

Helmut Schulz was born in the family of lawyer Reinhold Schultz (Reinhold Otto Schultz, 1858-1933); Between 1923 and 1927, Helmut studied musicology, philosophy, and philology at the University of Leipzig. In 1930, he became a candidate of sciences in the field of musicology - he wrote a dissertation on lawyer and composer Johann von Püttlingen (1803–1883). In 1932, Schulz defended his doctoral dissertation on the madrigal , entitled “Das Madrigal als Formideal. From 1928 to 1932, Helmut Schulz was an assistant, from 1932 to 1933 he was an assistant professor, and from 1933 to 1945 he was an extraordinary professor of musicology at the University of Leipzig and director of the Museum of Musical Instruments (succeeded by Theodore Kroyera ). Schulz also served as director of the Institute for Musicology and the Saxon Research Institute for Musicology. On November 11, 1933, he, who was not a member of the NSDAP , was among more than 900 scientists and teachers of German universities and universities who signed the " Statement by the professors about the support of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist state ." Since 1940, Schulz was the deputy chairman of the music examination management. In 1943, he was suddenly fired; died in 1945.
