Title

Artsakh was one of the 15 provinces of Great Armenia [5] . Today, Artsakh is also the self-name of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic . The region achieved independence as a result of the war with Azerbaijan in 1988-1994. The Armenians consider the war the liberation of their historical lands, and the composition of Ara Gevorgyan is dedicated to the Armenian victory.

Dispute

In 2007, the Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia and former singer Polad Bulbul-oglu said that “Artsakh” is an Azerbaijani song. Ara Gevorgyan replied that Bulbul-oglu’s statement was the result of embarrassment due to an incident in one of the episodes of the Russian television show Ice Age . During the performance of Russian singer Alexandra Savelyeva and Israeli skater Sergei Sakhnovsky, it was initially announced that the song “Armenian Dance” by Ara Gevorgyan would be used, but in reality a song was called “Sene de galmaz” by the Azerbaijani composer Tofig Guliyev, and only after that part of the composition “Artsakh” is included [6] . Ara Gevorgyan suggested that Azerbaijanis tried to justify the use of the composition by Dinara Gimatova without his permission at the Grand Prix in 2005 [7] .

At the ceremony held at school No. 3 in Masazir in connection with the start of the new school year in Azerbaijan in 2017, the students performed a special dance to the composition of Artsakh by Ara Gevorgyan. The incident caused a scandal, to which the school administration said that the song belongs to the Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov and is called "The Pearl of Karabakh." However, the rector of the National Conservatory of Azerbaijan Siyavush Karimi and the son of the composer Fikrat Amirov, Jamil Amirov, made a statement that the composer did not have such a work and that the statement about the belonging of the Artsakh composition to him was false [8] .
