Aboriginal Defense Act (1869)

Aboriginal Protection Act - A document adopted in 1869 in the British colony of Victoria by the Aboriginal Protection Committee. According to it, the aborigines of Victoria were given the protection and protection of the British government. It arranged their weddings, provided them with work and housing [1] .

Key Provisions

The act was one of the transformations in a series of reforms of the 1860-1870s (in particular, the authorities had to ensure the education of the entire population of the colony). Control over the life of Aboriginal people by the authorities deprived them of their freedom. The committee, at its discretion, gave them work and accommodation, selected couples for them. Aboriginal children were taken from families.

Consequences

In 1886, the Half-Caste Act was passed in Victoria. Aborigines, instead of isolated villages and reservations, began to be settled among the white population in order to assimilate them completely. This became the reason for their complete impoverishment. Then came more humane acts: the Aboriginal Act (1910) and the Aboriginal Lands Act (1970).
