Vouliagmeni [3] ( Greek Βουλιαγμένη [2] ) is a seaside small town in Greece , the southern suburbs of Athens . Balneological and climatic resort [3] . Located in Attica , on the coast of the Saronicikos Gulf of the Aegean Sea, at an altitude of 20 meters above sea level [1] at the foot of Imitos , 19 kilometers southeast of the center of Athens , Omonias Square, 3 kilometers south of Voula and 20 kilometers southwest of the international airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" . It enters the community (dim) of Vari-Vula-Vouliagmeni in the peripheral unit of East Attica in the periphery of Attica . The population of 4180 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [2] . Through the city passes Posidonos Avenue ( national road 91 Athens - Sounion ).
The city was created in 1920 [4] . It is named after the lake of the same name , the name of which comes from βουλιαγμένος "sunken" from βουλιάζω "to sink, go to the bottom; plunge ”and -γμένος - the end of the passive communion . The lake was formed after the collapse of the arch of a large underground cave.
In 1935 ( ΦΕΚ 21Α ), the community of Vouliagmeni was created [4] .

Resort
Vouliagmeni has a Mediterranean climate , with dry, hot summers and rainy winters. The average January temperature is about 9 ° C, July - about 27 ° C. In Vouliagmeni there are thermal (temperature about 25 ° C) radon [5] sodium chloride waters of mineral springs , used mainly for baths for diseases of the organs of motion and support, peripheral nerves, gynecological diseases. At the end of the 19th century, the territory of Vouliagmeni belonged to the Monastery of Petrakis . The monastery began to build a resort by the lake. Later appeared cafes and restaurants. In 1929, the Greek National Tourism Organization was established. Entrepreneurs became interested in the construction of hotels and summer recreation centers.
