Joukahainen ( Fin. Joukahainen ) - a demonic character of the Karelian-Finnish epic Kalevala , a young Laplander ( poika lappalainen [1] ), who challenged VÀinÀmöinen . He is considered a young and careless hero, according to one version, from Russia, according to another from Sweden, however, he claims to be an ancient sage from the time of creation. [2] He sets off for Kalevala on a sleigh drawn by a fire-breathing gelding . Boasting his knowledge, Jokahainen talks about Karelia , Ham and the Vuoksa River . VÀinÀmöinen disarms Joukahainen with spells, and he nearly dies in the swamp ( suo ), but asks to save his life, promising his sister Aino to marry VÀinÀmöinen. However, Aino does not want to marry the old man and drowns. After Aino's suicide, Jokahainen tries to kill VÀinÀmÀinen from a bow ( jousi ) [3]
In other runes, Jokahainen appears as a friend of VÀinÀmÀinen and Ilmarinen, together with them going to Pohjela for the Sampo magic mill. [2] During his retreat with the mill, he persuades VÀinÀmeinen to sing, and he wakes Louhi, mistress of Pohjela, who goes in pursuit of them with his singing.
In the Karelian-Finnish runes, Jokahainen appears as a trickster, pursued by failures, while he accompanies VÀinÀmöinen in his deeds. [2]
