Name Etymology
The name of the river comes from the language of the local aborigines of the Mita-modung , indicating the place where the cane grows [1] .
Geography
The river enters the Murray - Darling Basin . Mitta-Mitta originates at the foot of Mount Bogong [2] , from where its sources flow - the Kobungra River and the Big River that connect just south of Englers Rest . The waters of Mitt-Mitt flow first to the east, and then to the north, absorbing two and a half dozen tributaries, including the Russian Dart River and finally flowing into the main river of Australia - Murray near the city of Albury .
Mitta-Mitta brings 10% of its waters to Murray, occupying only 0.9% of the Murray – Darling basin [2] . The main settlements on the river are Mitta-Mitta, Dartmouth and Eskdale .
The length of the river is 204 km [2] .
Discovery History
For 21,000 years, Australian Aborigines lived in these parts [2] . The shores of Mitta-Mitta are home to the Tuturoa and Yaitmatang tribes. The first Europeans to learn about the existence of this river were researchers Hume and Howell, who discovered it in 1824 [1] . On the river bank in 1835 a village appeared, now the town of Mitta-Mitta in which gold began to be mined from 1852 [3] .
Flora and Fauna
In the lower reaches of the river live such commercial fish as perch , cod , and golden perch and long-necked galaxy . There are frogs and crustaceans [2] . Reeds and bushes grow in large numbers on the shores.
Human activities
In 1934 and 1979, dams were built, which led to the damming of Mitt-Mitt and Murray. The second of these dams has a height of 180 m - this is the 1st place in Australia for this indicator [2] .
Many fish species in Mitta-Mitta serve as an object of human fishing activities.
There are many rapids and rifts on the river, making it popular with kayaking enthusiasts .
