Biography
Friedrich August Uckert was born on October 28, 1780 in the city of Oytin . He studied at Halle-Wittenberg (under the supervision of Frederick Augustus Wolf ) and the University of Jena [2] ; in Jena, his teachers included Johann Heinrich Foss , Johann Jacob Griesbach and [3] .
After graduation, he worked as a tutor, first in Danzig , then in Weimar , where he provided education for the two sons of the late Friedrich Schiller . In 1808, Friedrich August Uckert moved to Gotha , where he served as an inspector at Gymnasium Illustre . Soon after, he became a librarian in the ducal library of the city, where he worked until his death, holding at that time the title of chief librarian in Gotha.
His first works were devoted to historical geography ; in 1815, his research on the geography of Homer was published, in 1816, on the geography of the Greeks and Romans, and a number of historical and geographical descriptions and narratives [4] [5] .
Since 1828, Ukert, together with Arnold German Ludwig Geeren, undertook the publication of essays on the history of individual European states (" Geschichte der Europäicshen Staaten "), which contributed much to the spread of historical interest in Germany and Europe. Gizerbecht then continued this business. The publication was never completed; recent volumes have been devoted to the history of Belgium and Finland [4] .
Since 1835, Ukert, together with Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Jacobs, published Merkwürdigkeiten d. herzgl. Bibliothek zu Gotha ” [4] .
Friedrich August Uckert died on May 18, 1851 in the city of Gotha.
In 1935, a small impact crater in the central part of the visible side of the moon was named in honor of the scientist [6] .
