History

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) - American poet and publicist, reformer of American poetry. The author of the poetic collection " Leaves of Grass ". His innovation in American literature was free verse .

The monument to the poet was opened in Moscow on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of his birth on October 14, 2009 near the building of the first humanitarian building of Moscow State University. The monument was donated to Moscow by the mayor of Washington in response to the decision of the Moscow authorities in 2000 to donate a monument to the Russian capital to the American poet Alexander Pushkin. The ceremony was attended by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , rector of Moscow State University Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy , Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov , Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov and others.

The authors of the monument: Honored Architect of Russia M. M. Posokhin, People's Artist of Russia, sculptor A. N. Burganov . They were the authors of the monument to A. Pushkin in Washington [1] . On the monument to Alexander S. Pushkin in Washington, the poet is depicted standing in full growth in outerwear. Behind it is a round column, on top of which is a Pegasus sculpture in its wings.

In the same way, the authors portrayed Walt Whitman on Moscow sculpture. The poet stands with a hat in his right hand on a low pedestal. Behind it is a Pegasus column.

A plate with an inscription in Russian and English is installed on the pedestal. Text in Russian: "Walt Whitman, the great American poet," You Russians, and we Americans! ... so far apart, you seem so different, but still ... something most important, our homelands are so similar ... "” .

Technical Data

The height of the monument is more than three meters. The sculptures are made of bronze, the pedestal is made of brown granite. Landscaped near the monument.
