The river is 79 km long. The catchment area is 1080 kmΒ² [3] . It takes its sources from the southern slopes of the Gamchen ridge [4] , flows in the meridional direction [5] . It flows into the Kronotsky Gulf in the common mouth with the Kronotskaya River [6] .

The local Itelmen name of the river is Chameu , meaning not established [7] . The river has been known under its modern name since 1908. The hydronym came from the surname of Bogachev [8] - a hunter who had land there [9] .

In 1921, oil manifestations were discovered in a river valley. Exploration work continued intermittently until 1965, after which it was terminated as unpromising [10] .
