History
Vasily Ivanovich Bazhenov (1738-1799) - Russian architect, architecture theorist, artist, representative of classicism, freemason, lover of Russian pseudo-gothic. Member of the Russian Academy, Vice-President of the Academy of Arts. V.I.Bazhenov designed the palace complex in Tsaritsyn, the Grand Kremlin Palace on Borovitsky Hill, etc.
Matvei Fyodorovich Kazakov (1738–1813) was a Russian architect, during the years of the reign of Empress Catherine II he established the center of Moscow in the Palladian style . One of the representatives of Russian pseudo-gothic. Designed the Big Tsaritsyn Palace in Moscow.
On September 1, 2007, a monument to architects Matvey Fyodorovich Kazakov and Vasily Ivanovich Bazhenov was unveiled in the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve in the capital. The site near the Grand Palace, next to the gallery-fence, was chosen as the place for the installation of the sculptural composition. The sculptor Leonid Mikhailovich Baranov and architect M. M. Posokhin became the author of the monument. Despite the fact that the architects designed and built the Catherine’s residence at different times (Bazhenov, then Cossacks), they are depicted on a single monument.
The sculptural composition is located in a clearing between the Grand Palace and the Bread House . Architects are represented in the clothes and hairstyles of their era when discussing the development project. Vasily Bazhenov is depicted with folded drawings in his right hand, Matvey Kazakov - with a sword and a hat under his arm. A miniature metal model of the building is installed between the architects. The composition is set on a low round pedestal with a step.
In the statues of architects, the author tried to convey a portrait likeness. After installing the monument, the architects' uniforms, pants, and shoes were toned. The uniform of Bazhenov's uniform became red, and of Kazakov - green.
The inscription on the granite pedestal: “Vasily Bazhenov, architect Matvey Kazakov”.
