Biography
Born in the family of Greek immigrants George S. Maragos and Constance Angelopoulos [4] [5] [6] . His father was from Castagni, and his mother from Gargalliani ( Peloponnese , Greece ). The family was engaged in business, owned a retail grocery store. One of his brothers, Theodore J. “Ted” Maragos (1933–2006), at the age of 27, became the youngest member of the North Dakota House of Representatives in its history [4] .
In 1968 he graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor of science degree [1] .
In 1968-1978 he served in the US Army [7] , including in 1969-1970 in Vietnam [8] . He retired with the rank of captain [1] .
He worked as a stockbroker and cashier at the Amtrak railway company [1] [7] .
In 1993-2006, 2011-2018 - Member of the House of Representatives of North Dakota [1] [2] .
In 2011, the North Dakota Senate passed a resolution in support of religious freedom for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople introduced by and Andrew Maragos [9] [10] . The resolution, which is part of the Religious Freedom Resolutions project, initiated in 2006 by the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew , calls on the Turkish government to respect the religious freedoms and rights of the Greek Orthodox minority in a predominantly Muslim country after decades of legal disputes, confiscation of property and the closure in 1971 of the only Orthodox Theological Seminary in Turkey - Halka Theological School [10] .
In 2015, he supported the bill introduced by Democrats in the North Dakota Senate prohibiting discrimination against, among other things, homosexuals and transgender people [11] [12] .
