Biography

Otto Lienau was born April 1, 1877 in Berlin in the family of music publisher Robert Emil Lienau (1838-1920); Otto's brother was the music publisher of Robert Heinrich Lienau (1866-1949). Since 1896, Otto Lienau studied shipbuilding at the Technical University of Munich and at the Technical University of Charlottenburg . After passing the state exam and receiving a diploma, he became an assistant at the University of Berlin , and in 1904 began working at the AG Weser company in Bremen. In 1909, Lienau took the position of professor of practical shipbuilding at the Technical University of Gdansk : here he taught until 1939, and in the academic year 1930/1931 he was rector. On November 11, 1933, Lienau was among the more than 900 scholars and teachers of German universities and universities who signed the " Statement of Professors on the Support of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist State ."

Otto Lienau was engaged in both theory and the practice of shipbuilding: in particular, metal decking of ships and ships. He also studied the history of shipbuilding: in 1933, under his leadership, three Viking ships were restored, then exhibited in the Museum of Gdansk in Oliva . Lienau was a member of the Association of German Engineers, the London Institute of Maritime Architects and the Society for Shipbuilding (since 1908). He died on October 4, 1945 in the city of Neustadt in Holstein .
